Overview

The Li Ka Shing Library is the centre for the academic and professional information resources and services that support the research and learning needs of the SMU community. Come visit us in our wonderful space or use our redesigned website to get desktop access to the world's top databases and journals.

Centrally located on the City Campus, the library building offers a range of work spaces, including quiet individual carrels, book-able project rooms for 4-6 students, open spaces for individual or collaborative use, and a cafe within the library for study breaks. The entry level features a collaborative study area and a collection of lifestyle reading materials. The entire building is wireless and designed for your laptop use, but there are also wired ports and a limited number of dedicated computers. A library classroom for hands on training and other faculty research services, such as the Centre for Academic Computing and Centre for Teaching and Learning, are also in the building. Emphasis is on service, access and cooperation rather than on building large collections.

The library staff includes individuals not only with education in library and information science but also degrees in subject areas key to SMU such as business and accounting. They bring experience from other institutions of higher learning both inside and outside of Singapore, from multinational corporations, research institutes, and government agencies. They all have one thing in common: their commitment to provide customer focused services for the SMU community.

The library partners with SMU's Office of Communications and IT to facilitate on-campus and off-campus authenticated access to e-resources anywhere in the world, with the Centre for Academic Computing to bring together library databases with financial and statistical research databases and with the Centre for Teaching and Learning to integrate student course reading materials into course management software.

The library also serves as a place of a variety of campus activities from hosting our own information sessions on developments in the library profession for our local colleagues to book launches to supporting the campus blood donation drive.

A feature article on the official opening of the Li Ka Shing Library appears in the March issue of Access, an Asian newspaper for the library and information community.
