If you publish articles or papers you will want to read this! Have you heard about Altmetric? This tool can show you the immediate impact of your papers beyond just citations. Altmetric watches social media, and scholarly publications for mentions of your work. It is all done using Digital Object Identifiers (DOI). To find out more contact the Library.

New This Term

Together with Centre for English Communication, the library piloted a new service of having Communication Coaches share the Information desk on level 3 with Research Librarians. The Communication Coaches helped students with their Academic Writing papers and the Research Librarians were at hand to immediately help students for their research and resource needs. The verdict: It was a success, as there were 20 consultations that took place over a 2 week period! And the good news is that we will do it again in Term 2. Academic Writing gets easier when you book your consultation!

The Library was happy to host the SMUSA Welfare night during the 24x6 exam period. As always, great talks were scheduled throughout the Term such as the Gartner session on MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) and Daniel Tsang's talk on Research Data Management. Stay tuned for "A Celebration of the Written Word" campaign, which will take place in Term 2! Finally, a shout out to the Library 2013 Halloween Costume Contest Winner "The Bronies" (Photo - top left corner).

Our Passion, Our Commitment, Your Advantage

From the Desk of Gulcin Cribb University Librarian

Welcome back to School and the new Academic Term.

Thank you for your ongoing support. 2013 has been a fantastic year for the Li Ka Shing Library. The Library has never been busier. There were record number of students and others using the Library in November 2013, accounting for over 166,000 entries in one month. According to 2013 SMUSA Student survey results, majority of students said that the library is their preferred study space.

In the New Year, we are embarking on a renovation  programme to upgrade library spaces and facilities. The renovations will create a 24/7 learning space, additional study spaces, a variety of seating for individual quiet study as well as for collaborative group work and a single information desk for all enquiries amongst other enhancements. We are hoping that the work will commence in April 2014 and most of it will be completed by the beginning of the 2014/15 academic year.

My second good news is the approval of SMU’s Open Access Policy by the Research Council in October. The purpose of this policy is to provide global open access to the research conducted by the faculty, staff and students of Singapore Management University  within the framework of open access principles. Dissemination of SMU research output through open access will make SMU scholarship more easily and widely discoverable and available to anyone in the world, increasing the visibility of SMU's research achievements.

Thank you  for your feedback and support throughout the year. I wish you a successful Term 2 and a very Happy Lunar New Year.
