Dear SMU Community
Under the SMU-X Programme, International Mediation Law and Practice(Jan-May 2021), our students were paired with legal experts to work on group projects that involved conceptualizing and designing the new Singapore Convention on Mediation website. They conducted research on practical issues in international mediation law and policy such as the use of mediation in investor-state dispute settlement; ethical dilemmas in hybrid dispute resolution processes; critical issues in the Singapore Convention on Mediation; technology in mediation; a cross-border comparison of mediator accreditation; and practice standards.
The programme culminated in the event, International Mediation Law and Practice in the 21st Century, on 5 April 2021, at SMU’s YPHSL. At the event, the students presented these posters, which they designed, to legal industry stakeholders. Policymakers, legal practitioners and academics attended the event, which also included a discussion on international mediation law and policy.
Given the increased interest in the use of mediation in commercial and investor-state disputes and the entry into force of the Singapore Convention on Mediation, the students’ work provides timely and relevant insight into the practical considerations of legal industry stakeholders. Their work shows a keenness to develop their dispute resolution expertise and in understanding how international mediation law may affect the dispute resolution landscape.
You can enjoy the full display of the students’ works at Level 3 of the Kwa Geok Choo Law Library from 1 November to 14 November.
